Since its inception, the Forum’s objectives have included:
- Creating a wider knowledge of the AirTrack project and the benefits it could bring, both to its users and to the broader community.
- Persuading potential investors and decision makers of its viability, importance and deserved priority.
- Supporting and encouraging potential scheme promoters, BAA/Heathrow Airport Ltd and any other partners such as Network Rail, to take forward the process of obtaining a Transport Works Act Order for the AirTrack scheme and to encourage progress towards its ultimate realisation.
- Pressing other organisations and government bodies for actions and decisions, to ensure progress with the project
Since 2006, BAA/HAL (Heathrow Airport Ltd) have been developing a specific and detailed scheme proposal - "Heathrow Airtrack", which substantially reflects the scheme concept championed by the AirTrack Forum, but now includes some important revisions.
In July 2009, HAL submitted an application to the Secretary of State for Transport for an order under the Transport and Works Act 1992, seeking powers to construct, maintain and operate the railway and to acquire the necessary land and associated planning consents. Full details of Heathrow Airtrack and the application, are available via BAA's Heathrow Airtrack web page (see links elsewhere on this website).
The submission of the application is a significant and most welcome step forward in ensuring that AirTrack is built. The Forum will continue to pursue its other objectives to encourage approval and funding for the project.
