Since its inception, the AirTrack Forum has sought to inform and persuade decision makers in Government and other key stakeholders of the practicality, importance and value of the AirTrack scheme.
The most recent major work commissioned by the Forum (in 2007) was a study undertaken by consultants SDG to identify the wider economic benefits of the scheme (see
Wider Economic Benefits Study).
Previously, amongst its other activity, the Forum commissioned a major study ("Outline Business Case") from consultants Atkins. This was completed in early 2004 and confirmed the business and practical case for the scheme. Subsequently, the Forum was actively involved in studies undertaken during 2005 on behalf of the SRA (Strategic Rail Authority) and the Rail Division of the Department for Transport which reconfirmed the findings of the earlier work (see Reports & Publications).
A broad range of other commitments has included items as diverse as the publication of an information leaflet in 2004, and a revision published in November 2007; a Parliamentary briefing/reception for MP's and Lords; many presentations to groups as diverse as London and local business organisations, rail enthusiasts, local authority and environmental groups; participation in a regional "Olympic Roadshow"; and engagement with EU organisations in Brussels.
Since 2006, BAA/HAL (Heathrow Airport Ltd) have been developing a specific and detailed scheme proposal - "Heathrow Airtrack", which substantially reflects the scheme concept championed by the AirTrack Forum, but now includes some important revisions.
In July 2009, HAL submitted an application to the Secretary of State for Transport for an order under the Transport and Works Act 1992, seeking powers to construct, maintain and operate the railway and to acquire the necessary land and associated planning consents. Full details of Heathrow Airtrack and the application, are available via BAA's Heathrow Airtrack web page (see links elsewhere on this website).
During this period, the Forum has continued to engage with BAA/HAL to encourage and advise as the proposal moved forward to the application stage. The submission of the application is a significant and most welcome step forward in ensuring that AirTrack is built. The Forum will continue to pursue its other objectives to encourage approval and funding for the project and offer advice and support to the scheme promoters.
